Lawrence T. Ross, affectionately known to his loved ones as "Boss Ross," "Daddy," "Daddy Ross," and "My Uncle," was born on July 3, 1936, in Charlotte, NC, and was called home to heaven on March 6, 2025. With an unmatched presence, Lawrence had a gift for making everyone feel seen and appreciated. His infectious laugh, ever-present smile, and playful sense of humor lit up every room he entered. He was a man who never met a stranger and, as many would attest, was the ultimate flirt.

Lawrence attended schools in Charlotte before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a mechanic. After being stationed at the Air Force base in Charleston, SC, Lawrence fell in love with the city and made it his home after retiring with nearly 30 years of service. Even after his retirement, Lawrence continued to work on cars, staying connected to his passion for mechanics and remaining active throughout his life.

A man of wisdom, Lawrence was known for his collection of sayings that captured his caring spirit and sense of humor. He was always there to lend a hand, often asking, "You need anything?" or offering a warm meal with, "Are you hungry?" His response to the question, “How are you?” was simple but full of faith: "GOD HAS ME, so I’m good." True to his nickname, "Boss Ross," he would often say, "There’s only one opinion that matters in my house, and that’s mine—so leave yours outside." He shared a special bond with his brother, Colton, whom he lovingly called "bruh man," and always regarded himself as his brother’s keeper.

Lawrence’s legacy is one of love, humor, and generosity. He touched the lives of so many with his kindness, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Preceded in death by:

His parents, Evelyn McMullen and Hazel McMullen; ex-wife, Verian Durham; brothers, Colton Ross Jr. and Haskell McMullen; sister-in-law, Berdell Ross; grandmother, Martha Moore; and nephews, Colton Ross III and Charles Black.

Survived by:

His beloved daughter, Dawnalia Ross Smith; granddaughter, Renee Smith; and great-grandchildren, Major Smoot, Isaac Smoot, and Jaxson Smoot. He is also survived by his nephews, Jonathan “Eddie” Ross and Dewey Ross; nieces, Colette Ross and Sheryl Ross Ely (Wendell); as well as a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

Lawrence valued his long-time friendships and treasured the memories made with his travel companions, including Ms. Sally Brown, his barber Carl, and his dear friends Trish and Tony. He was especially fond of Ms. Dorothy “Dottie” Sheppard and her children, Denice “Niecy” Sheppard, Ronnie Sheppard, and Paula Rutgers, who lovingly referred to him as “Daddy Ross.”

In his later years, as his health declined, Lawrence was surrounded by the love and care of those he considered family. He was deeply grateful for the support he received from Ms. Dottie, Shelia (the owner of the sub shop across from his apartment), and his devoted caregiver, Melissa Henderson, and her family. The Ross family extends their heartfelt thanks to Lawrence's Charleston family for the love and support they provided since his military retirement.

A special thanks goes to Melissa Henderson for her unwavering care and kindness. Lawrence often said he had taken care of himself since the age of 17, and thanks to Melissa, he was able to maintain his independence and dignity until his passing.

Lawrence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit, generosity, and love will continue to live on in the heartsof his family and friends.
